Across the United States a single-stage air conditioner installed on existing ducts runs $5,200-7,600. In the four cities we have researched, that figure varies by only a few hundred dollars.
What varies by thousands is the climate-specific item: a swamp cooler conversion in the dry high desert ($6,800-14,500), a whole-house dehumidifier in the humid southeast ($1,600-3,400), or a furnace paired with the AC in a cold-winter market ($8,900-15,500 for both).
Duct rework is the other large swing across the United States, at $850-5,200, and it is the item most often missing from a headline quote.
The box is not the variable
Manufacturers sell the same equipment nationwide and installers pay similar wholesale prices, so a mid-range condenser and coil land in a narrow band almost everywhere.
What is not the same is what your house needs around it. A house that has never had ductwork because it was cooled by an evaporative cooler needs ducts. A house in a humid climate needs dehumidification the AC alone will not deliver. A house in a cold climate has a furnace that is probably the same age as the AC.
That is why comparing a quote you found online against a quote from your own city usually tells you nothing. The two numbers are not describing the same purchase.

The mistake that costs the most
Buying a bigger unit than the house needs. It is the most common upsell in this trade and in humid climates it makes comfort worse, not better.
An air conditioner removes moisture only while it is actually running. An oversized unit reaches the thermostat setting in short bursts and shuts off, so it cools the air without drying it. The house ends up cold and clammy, indoor humidity sits above 60%, and mold can appear on interior surfaces with no leak anywhere. The fix is a correctly sized unit, a variable-speed system, or dedicated dehumidification - not more tonnage.
Ask for a load calculation, sometimes called a Manual J, rather than sizing from the old unit. Replacing like-for-like perpetuates whatever mistake was made the first time.
A contractor who sizes from the square footage alone, without asking about insulation, windows and orientation, is guessing.
Common questions
Repair or replace?
A useful rule of thumb across the United States: if the system is fifteen years or older and it needs a compressor or a coil, price the replacement instead. Below about ten years, most single failures are worth repairing. Between the two, get both numbers in writing and compare them properly.
Is high efficiency worth the money?
It depends on your cooling season and electricity price. In a long hot season the payback on a two-stage or variable-speed system can be reasonable; in a mild one it usually is not. Ask the contractor to show the annual running-cost difference rather than quoting the efficiency rating at you.
Do I have to replace the furnace at the same time?
In a cold climate, usually yes if it is the same age - the labour overlaps substantially and doing them separately wastes it. In a warm climate where the furnace is barely used, that logic is weaker.
What is a matched system and why does it matter?
The outdoor condenser and the indoor coil are engineered to work as a pair. Mixing an old coil with a new condenser can cost efficiency and sometimes voids the warranty. If a quote is unusually cheap, check whether the indoor coil is included.
How long does the installation take?
A straight like-for-like swap is one day. Adding ductwork, converting from an evaporative cooler, or replacing AC and furnace together typically runs two to four days.
